Youth Activities
St. Peter's is commited to reforming an active
group of children of all ages who enjoy getting together once a month
for a variety of activities. Our youth group is currently involved
in purchasing and wrapping gifts for under-priviledged families around
the Christmas
holidays.
A wonderful celebration is provided
by our Children on the first Sunday of every month. Instead of attending
Sunday School on those days, the children participate in the entire
mass; some of the older students volunteer as lectors for the Readings,
and the Youth Choir often has a special hymn to sing. our rector
tailors his sermons for the children - and for the youth in all of
us!
The
children sing as part of the combined Childrens/Adult Choir. Every
November, our Sunday School students assume the role of a selected
saint.
The students dress like the saints, and memorize (or read) key information
about their saint. Father Henderson interacts with the congregation
and the "saint" to see who knows the key details of the saint's
life. It's a great learning experience for young and old alike!
This has become a Christmas
Eve tradition for many local families! At 5pm on Christmas Eve, we
tell the Nativity story, complete with songs. The children
carry the Nativity figures to the creche and carefully place them
in
their spots when their person/animals are discussed. The children become
personally connected with this wonderous story as they wait for mention
of the donkey, or the shepherds, or the baby Jesus. The church is often
packed with children and parents for this special service; if this
is
not a tradition in your family yet, come join us once and you'll be
hooked!
Children, some as young as
11 years old, regularly serve with the adults, as acolytes. The children
have been trained by the veterans, and do a wonderful job on the altar!
Any child interested in becoming an acolyte should see Bob Sherwood.
